Capt Adil Vesuvala, a well known name in the Indian shipping industry, had nurtured the dream of becoming a mariner from a very young age. His passion for the sea drove him to become a Master Mariner and explore different perilous sea routes across the world. After spending nearly two decades as a mariner with reputed shipping liners, Capt Vesuvala decided to launch his own shipping company.
Along with Capt Sohrab Kapadia, another Master Mariner, Capt Vesuvala incorporated Marcons Shipmanagement Pvt Ltd on January 9, 1987. The company, which primarily started as a shipping agent, has diversified into other segments such as ship broking, freight forwarding and ship demolition under the guidance of Capt Vesuvala. His versatility and sharp business acumen helped him establish the firm as one of the leading ship management companies in the country.
From mariner to entrepreneur
Capt Vesuvala’s journey from the sea to land has been an adventurous and memorable one. That he has thoroughly enjoyed everything he has undertaken and accomplished becomes evident when he says, “I chalked out my own career path and never had to depend on others to push me towards success. In fact, my profession as a mariner has helped me immensely to shape my present endeavours. As a mariner you deal with uncertainties on the sea. A mariner’s life is full of adventures, challenges, risks and intense excitement to reach the shore safely.”
After spending some glorious years on sea and having gathered loads of confidence and expertise, Capt Vesuvala decided to start afresh as an entrepreneur. In his words, “An ideal mariner cannot sit idle after hanging his mariner’s coat. So I made up my mind to start my own business, where I don’t have to sail, but can still stay close to marine activities.”
Steering the organisation
Capt Vesuvala’s pioneering leadership qualities are evident in the way he has forged a dedicated, committed and enthusiastic team at Marcons Group. His interpersonal skills in dealing with colleagues and employees are much admired within the organisation.
A man of sharp business acumen, he prefers to lead his team with rational thinking and sound business plans. Capt Vesuvala drew upon his experience from his sailing days to build a team that would not succumb to pressure and could take the lead whenever required. “I lay considerable importance on my human resources, since they assist me in steering the organisation towards the goals set. I have paid special attention to building a team of professionals who have a wide spectrum of experience from the maritime industry”, points out Capt Vesuvala. According to him, “commitment to ethical values and an endeavour to perform with excellence” are the skills required to be successful in any business.
Diversifying to succeed
Capt Vesuvala initially founded his company as a shipping agency and broking house, but later realised that to sustain in the highly competitive market he would need to diversify as much as possible. Capt Vesuvala explains, “Keeping in tandem with the industry, we decided to diversify by engaging in the export of ship machinery and spares. Later, with the advent of international freight forwarding services we started operating as a Multimodal Transport Operator (MTO).”
Capt Vesuvala’s strategic business decisions helped his company achieve the Directorate General of Shipping’s licence to act as an MTO. This gave the company the permit to issue its own bill of lading for international freight forwarding services to serve customers through a wide network of agents across the world. |
