CWG to boost business of radio taxi, car rental operators

Radio taxi and car rental operators are expanding their fleet size to cater to large number of tourists coming to watch the Commonwealth Games

While of late the Commonwealth Games (CWG) have been in news for all wrong reasons, it is expected to throw open huge business avenues for radio taxi and car rental operators in the national capital. Anticipation of large number of tourists coming to watch CWG is resulting in increase in fleet capacity by radio taxi and car rental operators. Talking about the company’s expansion activities, Vinod Mishra, vice president of Mega Cabs, a leading radio taxi operator operating in Delhi and other leading metros of India, says, “We have added 600 new taxis to our existing fleet. That apart, we have also set up counters nearby airports where CWG visitors can book pre-paid taxi services. We are taking every step to ensure that passengers enjoy hassle-free and comfortable journey during the games.”

Need of the hour

Meanwhile, industry insiders believe that expansion in fleet capacity will reduce burden on other modes of public transportation such as buses, metro rail, local trains, auto rickshaws etc. Leading car rental operators in the capital such as Avis India and Meru Cabs plan to add 100 and 300 cars, respectively, to its existing fleet by the time CWG commence.

However, when ShippingBiz360 contacted International Travel House, another leading car rental operator operating in the capital, Siddharth Tripathi, assistant manager for corporate services, said, “Although we have kept some vehicles in  standby in case the need arises, we are not expecting a huge spur in business due to CWG as major part of the transportation arrangement has been made by the Delhi government. The government has acquired several low floor buses to facilitate transportation during CWG.” Notably, on July 28, Delhi Transport Corporation said to the Delhi High Court that additional 911 low floor buses will be added to its existing fleet ahead of the games.
