Security Council allows using force to fight piracy for one more year

THE United Nations Security Council has extended its permission to states and regional organisations to use force against pirates off the coast of Somalia for another 12 months.

The Council renewed calls to have officers of the countries prosecuting pirates to be stationed on naval vessels to take suspects into custody and conduct investigations.

At the request of the Somalian government, the Council also called on member states "to strengthen capacity in Somalia, including regional authorities, to bring to justice those who are using Somali territory to plan, facilitate, or undertake criminal acts of piracy and armed robbery at sea."
