Shipping Press Release

Modernisation of Paradip port

Union shipping minister G K Vasan conveyed the message in Lok Sabha that Paradip port in Orissa is not congested and various measures are being undertaken to boost the port’s capacity

November 23, 2009: The Union shipping minsiter, Shri G K Vasan in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha informed that the Paradip Port in Orissa is not congested. Paradip Port experienced congestion for a short period of 3 months from June-August 2009 because of draft restrictions and strike at Haldia Dock Complex, leading to diversion of vessels bound for Haldia to Paradip Port. Some bulk carriers were however diverted to other ports for a short period when the Single Point Mooring (SPM) was under breakdown. Since September 2009, there is no congestion at the Paradip Port. Nevertheless, various measures are being undertaken to increase the capacity of the port, which are as follows:

·         Deepening of entrance and approach channels to handle capesize vessels

·         Construction of a new iron ore berth, one coal berth, one multi-purpose berth and one oil berth

·         Mechanisation of the existing berths
