Modernisation of major ports in Tamil Nadu

Aug 4, 2009, New Delhi: As per the ongoing National Maritime Development Programme (NMDP), the Government of India (GoI) has planned to modernise all the major ports in the country including those located in Tamil Nadu. This programme, inter-alia, includes deepening of channels, construction and up-gradation of new berths and terminals through public-private participation (PPP), mechanisation of cargo-handling facilities including replacement of old equipments and rail-road connectivity.
 
According to the 11th Five Year Plan, funds allocated to Chennai, Tuticorin and Ennore Ports are Rs 1254.79 crore, Rs 1448.20 crore and Rs 1227.74 crore, respectively.
 
This information was given by GK Vasan, the Union Minister of Shipping, in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
