June 15, 2009, New Delhi: India is a significant maritime player in the world, with over 7500 km of coastline and a number of ports dotting the same. The ports sector in India has undergone a sea change in the past few years, fuelled largely by increasing investments. Investment in major and minor ports over the next 10 years is expected to be around $10 billion.
While container ports remain in the news most of the time, the dry bulk sector contributes almost 20-30% of the traffic handled. This requires ports to be well equipped with modern and cost-effective dry bulk handling, storage and distribution systems. Considerable cost savings in terms of investment and operational expenditure can be realised by optimising the design of dry bulk terminals.
To highlight the importance of dry bulk systems in ports, Technicom Management Services (TMS) is holding the first knowledge seminar series on Dry Bulk Handling in Ports. The seminar will be facilitated by B Velan of Scorpio Engineering Pvt Ltd. Mr Velan is an industry veteran with 25 years of experience in bulk material handling, particularly in ports.
This one-day seminar will be held in Chennai on June 22, 2009. The seminar will cover various topics on the subject such as the types of dry bulk, the influence of dry bulk characteristics on handling, dust control systems, loading, unloading, storage and distribution, comparison of available equipment and systems, typical technical layouts (major and minor ports), and installed and operating cost calculations.
This is a must-attend event for industry players, project planners, engineers and managers involved in project review and appraisal.
