The Federation of Ship Agents Association of India (FEDSAI) was formed on May 10, 1990. The main objective of the federation is to evaluate the common issues affecting shipping and transportation, including multimodal transportation across India and thereafter set a code of conduct and issue best practices for the member shipping companies.

The names of some of the member associations of FEDSAI are Association of Shipping Interests in Calcutta, Mumbai and Nhava-Sheva Ship-Agents Association, Northern India Steamer Agents Association and Bangalore Steamer Agents Association, among others.

FEDSAI undertakes various activities, some of which are as follows:

• Works in close coordination with the government to bring in legislative reforms in the Indian shipping industry
• Undertakes educational research for the growth and development of the shipping sector
• Represents, promotes and works towards establishing and implementing the rights of the private ports and terminals operators
• Represents to the government authorities the various shipping issues in order to promote trade and encourage infrastructure development in the shipping sector
