Indian Register of Shipping (IRS)

Freakin' Awesome! Freakin' Awesome! Freakin' Awesome! Freakin' Awesome! Freakin' Awesome!

Established in 1975, the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) is an independent ship classification body. The association extends certification and technical inspection services to shipping companies. It also provides services required for the completion of various industrial and offshore projects.

The classification procedure followed at the IRS is at par with international standards. Broadly, the agency offers four distinct types of classification services. These are as follows:

  • Design Appraisal: Under this procedure, IRS appraises new structures and control systems to ensure that the ships comply with international norms.

  • Survey during construction: IRS surveyors monitor and test equipments used for construction activities. All manufacturing components are carefully checked and verified by a team of competent inspectors.

  • Survey after construction: Periodic surveys are conducted to ensure continued adherence to the shipbuilding norms and regulations.

  • Classification of existing ships: The agency also surveys and classifies ships that are not built under its supervision.
